Murphy takes gold for 22 per cent cut in carbon emissions 11 December 2015

Construction and engineering firm J Murphy & Sons has won a top environmental award for beating its 10% target for reducing carbon emissions.

Murphy’s target was 10% across its UK business by the end of 2014, but the organisation achieved a 22% reduction following initiatives focused on fuel and electricity emissions.

Chief among these on the transport side were: fitting 1,900 trucks with telematics to monitor driver performance and restrict vehicle speeds; investing in electric and hybrid vehicles; and running driver awareness campaigns to encourage energy-efficient driving.

Murphy won a gold award in the carbon reduction category of the 2015 Green Apple Awards for environmental best practice.

“This gold award is a fantastic validation of the major achievements we have made recently and we continue to invest in reducing carbon across our business,” comments Shane Longworth, group environmental advisor at Murphy.

Longworth says that the driver monitoring programme has demonstrated that safer, slower drivers also use less fuel.

Several vehicles are now trialling engine management fuel saving devices.

Murphy has also achieved gold accreditation in the FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme) programme.
