New approach to trailer leg operation from Jemison23 March 2010

There could be a revolution in the trailer leg market, thanks to the launch of an innovative technology from Jemison.

The Easyleg system comprises pneumatic trailer landing legs that can support an unconnected trailer, and that do not require the physical effort of lowering and raising the legs manually.

Jim Jemison, founder of Jemison, and inventor of the new legs, claims Easyleg increases safety through the reduced risk of injury, and decreases time of operation.

"The elimination of the wind handle will cut the number of accidents caused by it hitting the trailer leg operator," explains Jemison. "We believe haulage companies will be interested, because the Easyleg system is automatic, contains no grease, and any dirt that is picked up by them, is soon forced out by the air when the legs are extended."

The lifting and lowering operation is undertaken by the use of tractor airbags, which are fed from the existing tractor air supply. When the legs are in the desired position, pneumatic actuators move locking pins into position, operated by pilot valves mounted inside the control box on the side of the trailer.

Jemison says the legs can be extended and retracted in just five seconds – compared with around three minutes for a conventional system. There are currently 16 units on the road, and Jemison admits a great deal of interest, as well as an approach for the distribution of the units. Specially designed padlocks, as well as remote control units are just two of the additional features available for the system.

Jemison also reveals that Lincoln county council had enquired about a drawbar solution, and it is something that the company is investigating further.
