New generation heavy lift Trojan Truck revealed 10 December 2014

Heavy lifting transport specialist ALE has unveiled the latest addition to its transport fleet – the Trojan truck, described by the company as the first of the next generation for the industry.

The new truck is said to be capable of pulling loads up to 300 tonnes, and its maker says it's a breakthrough in capability, fuel efficiency and reliability.

Designed by ALE engineers and produced in the UK, Trojan can link multiple tractor units in a command and drone convoy, with the command vehicle managing all tractors, using mechanical, air and CANbus connections.

Steering, vehicle braking, electrics, engine and transmissions on all tractor units are synchronised by a central computer, which ensures that each vehicle is matched in terms of gear, rmp and torque.

Vehicle braking, engine compression braking and transmission retardation can be controlled identically, and there is no limit to the number of vehicles that can be added to the convoy, says Butler.

Based on a concept conceived in 2012, the Trojan truck's design weight is 72,000kg. Its maximum geared road speed is 48mph, and it can pull a gross combination weight of 300 tonnes at a maximum gradient of 14%.

The bespoke engine and transmission performance reduces emissions and is said to provide a fuel saving of 40%, compared to previous iterations.

UK oil blender Morris Lubricants, which has a 29 year affiliation with ALE, supplied specially engineered oils and lubricants for the new truck, to cope with the extreme environments.

"ALE has always had the utmost confidence in Morris Lubricants regarding the quality and range of products and their technical assistance," states Gary Butler, ALE project manager and designer of the Trojan truck.

This is the first of a fleet of six new trucks to be built by ALE. Four will be retained in the UK, with two destined for the United Arab Emirates.
