New technician apprenticeship standards all set for next year 23 October 2015

New apprenticeship standards for bus and coach technician, bus and coach engineering manager, and heavy vehicle service and maintenance technician have been approved, and are expected to be available for delivery for the 2016/17 academic year.

That’s the latest from the ‘Trailblazer’ group responsible for developing the new apprenticeship standards, chaired by Lloyd Mason, who also sits on the irtec technician licensing expert working group and is engineering and development manager at Arriva UK Bus,

“The three standards are now on the Gov.uk apprenticeship standards website [and] we have now started work on developing the assessment plans for each of them,” says Mason.

“This will involve closer working with training providers, assessment organisations, awarding bodies and professional engineering institutions to determine their detailed content, how they will be taught, and how they will be assessed,” he continues.

“When completed, we will then have to get them costed before submitting to BIS [Department for Business Innovation and Skills] for approval. We plan to have the assessment plans ready for submission in the first quarter of 2016.”

Employers leading development of the new apprenticeship standards are: Arriva, Blackpool Transport, First, Go Ahead, London United, National Express, Nottingham City Transport, Reading Buses, Stagecoach, Transdev Blazefield and Trent Barton.

The heavy vehicle sector is represented by DAF Trucks, Isuzu Trucks, MAN, Mercedes-Benz UK, Renault, Scania GB and Volvo.
