Nissan launches the e-NV200 – the first all-electric LCV 05 March 2014

Nissan has unveiled the first production model of its all-electric e-NV200, based on the NV200 but with electric drivetrain technology from the Leaf.

The new vehicle is designed for city delivery fleets and, claims Nissan, will "change the face of light commercial vehicles forever".

The battery can be recharged overnight using a domestic 16A single-phase 3.3kW supply – or within four hours if a 6.6kW/32A supply is used. If using a dedicated CHAdeMO DC 50kW quick charger, the battery can be recharged to 80% in 30 minutes.

Nissan is staking its claim on the electric light van market by re-engineering the e-NV200, rather than simply converting the existing NV200 – the new London taxi – to electric.

The drivetrain has been redesigned to suit the vehicle's intended city-based delivery application and changes have been made to the vehicle shell to retain the 4.2m3 cargo space of the NV200.

It can carry two standard Euro pallets; sliding side doors on both sides and wide opening rear doors enable easy loading and unloading.

The 80kW ac synchronous motor is also now integrated with the battery charger and inverter in one compact, self-contained unit. Meanwhile, the lithium-ion battery has been changed to allow it to fit under e-NV200's floor without compromising the cargo area.

The battery module is set low in the vehicle, under the load floor, and is mounted in a reinforced zone for extra safety protection.

The e-NV200 also features a new braking system, with a higher regenerative capacity. Hill Start Assist is fitted as standard, holding the vehicle for two seconds after the footbrake is released to allow smooth starting.

Pre-production versions of the vehicle have been trialled by companies such as FedEx, Coca-Cola, DHL and British Gas.
