Norman Baker gives biomethane vehicles a boost 06 June 2013

Speaking at the a biomethane and gas vehicle conference, sustainable transport minister Norman Baker has promoted the advantages of alternative fuels in vehicles.

"We are continuing to drive down carbon emissions in transport, and fleet vehicles are an area where we are making good progress," said Baker.

"As part of that, I announced today [5 April 2013] that £5m will be available to local authorities to upgrade buses with pollution-reducing technologies, such as cleaner engines or exhaust after-treatment equipment."

This announcement follows last week's pledge of £12m for new sustainable buses for the UK, made available through the Green Bus Fund.

The Minister also said he was "delighted" that the Gas Vehicle Refuelling Hub was being launched at the conference. He said he is working with colleagues across government on making the most of resources such as biomethane from waste.
