Northwards ships in reefers from Schmitz Cargobull 18 January 2017

Lerwick-based specialist logistics firm Northwards has taken delivery of four new reefers from Schmitz Cargobull for its contract transporting chilled salmon and white fish from the Shetlands to the Scottish mainland.

Northwards commercial director Neil Leslie explains that the company has been buying Schmitz Cargobull trailers since it was founded in 2002 and, based on their performance, Schmitz was the obvious choice.

“We operate reefers manufactured by Schmitz Cargobull that have put in a decade of service and still provide outstanding performance,” comments Leslie.

“Because of the excellent product quality, Schmitz Cargobull trailers offer a longer service life than conventionally expected,” he continues.

“That means the total cost of ownership is far lower and offers fantastic value. These new trailers are likely to last us for at least 14 years.”

The new reefers, which join a 120-strong fleet of semi-trailers, have been specified for ferry operation, with hold-down shackles for durability and support when crossing the North Sea.

They also come with Schmitz Cargobull’s proprietary Ferroplast insulation, which uses expanded, closed cell polyurethane foam sandwiched between steel skins.

That means meaning lifelong full payload capacity – unlike reefers bodied using GRP panels, which can increase in weight by 1,000 kg in 10 years.
