Operator unloads cool fuel and AdBlue savings with Mercedes Actros28 October 2014

Temperature-controlled distribution business Cool Solutions has taken delivery of 17 Actros 2545 tractors with BigSpace cabs and has ordered 10 more, after reporting "huge" potential savings in fuel and AdBlue.

The Hull-based operator trialled a demonstrator from dealer Northside Truck & Van and found it improved fuel economy by 1 mpg.

"Returns from our previous vehicles have been around the 9 mpg mark, but our first Actros are already up to 10 mpg," says Trevor Underwood, director of Cool Solutions.

AdBlue consumption is around 21-22 litres per week, he adds – half that of the operator's Euro 5 units. "A Euro 6 vehicle by another manufacturer uses 60-70 litres over the same period. Given that each of our 40 tractors typically covers 80,000 miles per year, the potential savings in both diesel and AdBlue are huge."

The 449bhp Actros have been specified with Mercedes' Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC), a cruise control system that employs 3D GPS mapping to read 3km of topography ahead, then responds by controlling speed, braking and the transmission to maximise fuel efficiency.

The vehicles are supplied on CharterWay contract hire from Mercedes-Benz Financial Services, with full R&M cover.
