Optare unveils Euro 6 double-decker for London market28 May 2014

Bus manufacturer Optare has unveiled the MetroDecker, its new double-decker bus which is designed to improve fuel economy and passenger comfort.

Launched at an event in London last week, the MetroDecker is specified to Transport for London standards and weighs in at less than 10 tonnes.

It features a 230bhp Mercedes OM934 Euro 6 engine, with ZF Ecolife transmission, and TopoDyn and AIS to maximise fuel efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.

As with other Optare vehicles, the engine and transmission are mounted as a removable powerpack. All chassis and access points have been placed externally without the use of any floor-access plates. A high-mounted exhaust allows the DPF cartridge to be removed in-situ – all features, says Optare, which make maintenance easier and more efficient.

It also has full electronic levelling, independent front suspension, and a four air spring rear axle with an anti-roll bar. It comes equipped with an iBus monitoring and management system.

The MetroDecker is Optare's second design for the London market, following the MetroCity.

Electric and hybrid versions will be available from next year.
