Owen Pugh’s tippers prove value of top specs 17 July 2013

Tyneside-based Owen Pugh Group is adding six new tippers to its fleet – all Loadmasters built on Scania 8x4 chassis.

Three are already in service, working on the same jobs as much older vehicles – one in particular being a 340bhp Volvo FM registered in November 2001.

"The body on that truck is a true testimony to the Loadmaster," comments Owen Pugh group plant and fleet manager Stewart Grainger.

"It might need a lick of paint, but it still has all the strength and structural integrity it had the day it was new."

In fact, Grainger says Owen Pugh is getting up to 12 years out of its tippers, where others get only five, primarily because of its choice of Thompsons' Loadmaster body.

"We've standardised on the full-spec Loadmaster for all our tipper chassis since 1998," explains Grainger, commenting that, with, for example, front and rear corner posts, his tippers can take anything.

"[They] are extremely robust and hard-wearing, fully able to handle every task we put them to – and being double-skinned, the outside of the bodies remain in very good condition too," he continues.

"The reason for buying top specification trucks at the outset is that their whole life costs should end up being as low as possible," he adds.
