Partnership aims to tackle HGV driver shortages19 March 2013

A partnership between Driving Force and Chevron Training aims to help drivers across North West England and North Wales complete their CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) training before the September 2014 deadline.

European legislation states all professional drivers must complete CPC training, which can cost the individual hundreds of pounds. Drivers, along with their employers, will be liable for fines if they are caught behind the wheel without a Driver Qualification Card after the deadline.

However, recent surveys have suggested that many drivers do not intend to complete the training, often because of the cost, and are thinking of changing career or retiring.

"There are an estimated 255,000 HGV licence holders in the UK who are yet to complete their CPC training, posing a major staffing headache for distribution and logistics firms," warns John Sutcliffe, UK operations manager at Driving Force.

"By partnering with Chevron, we hope to solve a problem for both drivers and the industry as a whole."

"As a business, we are keen to do everything we can to help avert the looming skills crisis in the haulage industry," adds John McKenna, co-owner at Chevron Training.
