Payload of walking floor trailers tips it for Aggregate Industries14 November 2014

Aggregate Industries has taken delivery of 11 walking floor trailers from Paneltex Martrans, after trialling a demonstrator unit last July and finding it could offer up to 40% more payload than a typical eight-wheel rigid.

Other benefits, including a reduced environmental impact, have led the company to specify non-tipping trailers for all future vehicles.

"Since their introduction into the fleet, the Paneltex Martrans walking floor trailers have all been performing really well," confirms Jeff Stobbart, national logistics manager for Aggregate Industries.

"The massive 28-tonne payload from these trailers enables us to carry at least 35 to 40% more product than we would get by using a typical eight-wheel rigid."

The company operates a haulier franchise programme and the new trailers have gone into service with franchisees.

The walking floor trailers, Aggregate believes, will enable its franchisees to reduce carbon emissions by using fewer vehicle loads. The equipment also boosts backhaul opportunities, as all types of product can be carried in the trailer.

The trailers are expected to be in operation for at least 10 years – as opposed to five years for the 26-tonne rigid tippers – and each trailer will cover approximately 90,000km per year.
