Police data recorder pioneer joins MiX Telematics 17 August 2015

Robert Peel, who pioneered the use of onboard data recorders at Surrey Police, is now project consultant for emergency services for MiX Telematics.

In his new role, Peel will work to develop the use and application of telematics systems by the emergency services nationwide.

"We are delighted that Robert has elected to join our team," comments Steve Coffin, marketing and operations director for MiX Telematics Europe.

"We have long been active in the Blue Light sector and the experience and knowledge Robert now brings to us will help us further develop our offer in order to serve these essential services even better."

Peel was at the then Surrey Constabulary from January 1971 to 2002, specialising in the technical side of traffic policing, collision investigation, vehicle and tachograph examination.

When Surrey set up a single Collision Investigation unit at the end of 1998 he became one of the first members to join, remaining on tthe unit until retiring in 2002.

During this time, he assisted with a trial of data recorders on police vehicles, working with the fleet department to fit divisional vehicles with incident data recorders (IDR) and an early form of MiX Telematics' journey data recorder (JDR).

In the first incident involving a vehicle with a recording system, it exonerated the police officer from allegations made by the other driver.

In 2004 Peel was approached by the head of the Surrey Police Collision Unit and asked to help set up a project to fit all Surrey Police Vehicles with data recorders.

Peel and Surrey Police worked with MiX Telematics to fit several vehicles with FM Communicators linked to the IDR units.

The units provided useful information around vehicle usage and driver behaviour, and the data was also used to show vehicle attendance at local hot spots.
