Put a check on poor vehicle maintenance – new report17 December 2013

Road safety charity Brake is calling on fleet managers to pay closer attention to mechanics' qualifications and training, after a survey revealed more than half of those who outsource repair and maintenance have never checked on individuals repairing their vehicles.

Brake's report, published through its Fleet Safety Forum and sponsored by Licence Bureau, found two-thirds of fleet managers outsource all vehicle servicing and repair, but only 52% check their qualifications.

Regular pre-drive checks are vital for safety, and the report reveals this is taken more seriously by those managing fleets of large vehicles, such as trucks or buses. Almost one in five (18%) of those with smaller vehicles did not require their drivers to carry out any pre-use checks.

"This report has highlighted worrying gaps in some fleets' management of vehicle risks," warns Laura Woods, research and information officer at Brake.

"Fleet managers have a duty to ensure their vehicles are safe, well-maintained and roadworthy, and that the mechanics working on their vehicles are fully qualified and their skills are kept up to date."

The report is free to Fleet Safety Forum subscribers, or £5 to non-subscribers. Brake is offering a free copy to the first 25 non-subscribers to request the report, along with a 50% discount on the first year's subscription to the Forum.
