Quarry operator builds fleet capability with two Volvo FMX tippers02 January 2020

West Midlands-based quarry business NRS has taken delivery of two Volvo FMX tippers, one a fleet replacement and the other an addition to meet growing demand.

Supplied by Volvo Truck and Bus Centre East Anglia, the FMX 8x4 chassis are fitted with Thompson tipper bodies. Both have 13-litre engines delivering 454bhp and up to 2,300Nm of torque.

Each truck is fitted with a five-camera system, along with a side scan system with left-turn warning technology.

The two latest additions will soon be joined by two more FMXs, with 494bhp engines. “The last four trucks we’ve bought have been specified with higher powered engines, which are working out to be more economical,” says Phil Marshall, haulage operations manager at NRS.

“Tyre wear rates have also reduced, because we use super singles on the front. It’s a combination that we’ll continue when looking at new vehicles, because we can really see the benefits.”

The 23-strong, predominantly Volvo fleet includes tippers and concrete mixers. “We’ve always found Volvo’s to be reliable trucks, they look good and meet all of our needs and requirements. Particular highlights are the I-Shift gearbox and the aftercare support we get from Volvo’s Coventry dealerpoint, which is second to none,” adds Marshall.
