Rare Scania T-Cab shines with low maintenance fifth wheel08 April 2014

A customised Scania T-Cab with custom-built tipper grab trailer – part of RTK Grab Hire's fleet – has been fitted with a Jost low-maintenance fifth wheel in a bid to keep this classic vehicle's paintwork in tip-top condition.

Production of the Scania T-Cab ceased in 2005 and RTK's vehicle is one of only a few left-hand chassis of its type in the UK, making it one of the rarest commercial vehicles on the road.

It picked up third prize at the 2013 Truckstar Festival, Europe's largest show.

The vehicle is still in operation and driver Matt Logan says the fifth wheel offers safe and efficient coupling, as well as reduced lubrication requirements.

"We've put a lot of work into building what I think is one of Europe's most distinctive and unique vehicles, which is still in commercial use," comments Logan.

"When you've put so much effort into a vehicle, you only want to specify parts that will help to keep it in showroom condition. The last thing you want is grease damaging the paintwork. That's why we went to Jost to specify its low-maintenance fifth wheel."

Jost explains that this unit is designed to eliminate the need to manually grease the main plate, which helps to keep the vehicle cleaner, reducing maintenance costs and the vehicle's environmental impact.

Logan adds: "The fifth wheel operates smoothly during driving and is extremely easy to couple and uncouple, making turnaround times quicker in the yard."
