Ricardo and Piaggio work on clean light CV engine family08 December 2010

A twin-cylinder turbo-diesel designed by Ricardo for Italian manufacturer Piaggio, is being claimed as the world's first engine of its type to be certified Euro 5 emissions compliant.

The new engine is part of a family spanning Piaggio's light commercial vehicles for use across European as well as Asian markets.

Piaggio Commercial Vehicles powertrain director Maurizio Marcacci explains that the new diesel engine family includes, at the premium end, a full Euro 5-compliant and diesel particulate filter (DPF) equipped 1.2 litre twin cylinder turbocharged, common rail engine.

It delivers 47kW, with extremely low fuel consumption and quoted CO2 emissions in the Piaggio Porter light van of 127g/km – ideal for inner city deliveries duty cycles.

"Thanks to its innovative features, this new Piaggio engine family will satisfy a broad range of customers," comments Marcacci.

"The degree of flexibility achieved … demonstrates the very effective manner in which Piaggio and Ricardo engineers have been able to work together," he adds.

And Ian Penny, Ricardo global director for engine engineering, adds: "The new two-cylinder diesel is both a world first in offering Euro 5 compliance in an engine of this type, as well as providing a cost-optimised architecture for naturally aspirated products in India."
