Ricardo report defines best practice in evaluating EV battery types 07 June 2011

Ricardo has today (7 June 2011) published a white paper outlining processes that commercial vehicle manufacturers and investors should adopt to evaluate electric vehicle (EV) battery systems.

Entitled 'A battery of questions for electric vehicle investors', the paper points to the lack of industry standards around cell chemistries, performance, durability and controls for battery systems.

Ricardo Strategic Consulting managing director Markus Doerr comments that interested parties are thus forced to operate without the benchmarks and technical information normally expected with powertrains.

And he says that this situation is compounded by the immaturity and lack of industry experience of EV battery systems suppliers, as well as the current 'gold-rush' of young companies chasing different opportunities, with many as yet unable to fulfil production quality standards.

"Through this report, we aim to provide some strategic insights to potential investors and actors in the market for automotive EV battery systems," states Doerr.

"Our aim is to … help automotive customers identify the supplier partners that will provide the most compatible and enduring medium and long-term fit to their business requirements."
