Safe and secure – lock into advice for van owners26 June 2015

With 185,000 vans broken into every year, there are simple but effective measures drivers can take to avoid becoming another statistic and jeopardising insurance payouts.

That's the message from Northgate Vehicle Hire, which has published a list of top tips for improved van security.

Compiled in conjunction with its subcontractor ProtectaVan Solutions, Northgate's advice includes checking that the vehicle is locked, using or installing additional double or deadlocks if possible.

"Many people do not realise that most vehicles' standard locking systems can be overcome with just a flat bladed screwdriver, but the good news is that they can be easily enhanced by fitting one of these extra security products," says Samual Williams, Northgate's new business manager.

He also points out another common weakness: "The latches on the top, middle and bottom of the back door are all connected by one wire – so if a thief drills a hole into your vehicle and manipulates/pulls the internal release wire , the doors will open" he warns.

"To tackle this, there are various anti-drill guards and door handle protectors available to reinforce the metal around this vulnerable point on your vehicle, making it harder for thieves to access the internal release wire and ultimately keep your van and its contents safe."

Williams also points to several manufacturer-specific security weaknesses, which can be prevented with products such as ECU (electronic control unit) shields.
