Safety first for Wincanton with 100 Mercedes-Benz Actros26 January 2018

Wincanton is upgrading its fleet with another 100 Mercedes-Benz Actros tractors, all specified with the manufacturer’s Safety Pack featuring Active Brake Assist 4 and Proximity Control Assist technology.

Supplied by dealer Orwell Truck & Van, the operator’s new additions are hauling shipping containers on skeletal trailers; most are based at Felixstowe, while others work from Liverpool and Birmingham.

Wincanton has specified the Actros 2545s with flat-floored versions of the StreamSpace cab, and the trucks are equipped with 444bhp, six-cylinder engines paired with PowerShift automated transmissions.

Each vehicle is also specified with Predictive Powertrain Control and a Safety Pack – the latter is now included on all new Mercedes vehicles, after Wincanton’s group fleet director Carl Hanson tried it for himself at Millbrook in November 2016.

Hanson says: “Given the extra equipment we have specified, these Actros tractor units are among the safest trucks available, and will help to protect other road users as well as our own drivers.”

He adds: “This latest order is further evidence of the deepening relationship we’re building with Mercedes-Benz Trucks and its dealers, particularly Orwell Truck & Van, which will be maintaining our Felixstowe-based trucks in its 24-hour, Ipswich workshop.

“The manufacturer and its franchisee have both taken the time to understand our business, and provide the vehicles and support we need to operate with maximum efficiency.”
