Samworth Brothers adds 18 Mercedes-Benz Actros to fleet03 January 2019

Temperature-controlled distribution operator Samworth Brothers has taken delivery of 18 Mercedes-Benz Actros 2545 tractors, with fuel performance and residual values clinching the deal.

Supplied by dealer Mertrux Truck & Van, the Leicester-based operator’s new additions are all powered by the 444bhp, OM471 12.8-litre engine, chosen after a trial of this and the 474bhp version. Both were tested and returned over 10mpg with single-deck trailers, but the 444bhp had a slight edge so was specified for the order.

The Actros tractors are all equipped with flat-floored StreamSpace cabs, Safety Packs and Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) systems.

Safety was a priority for Samworth, and the manufacturer’s Safety Pack includes the Active Brake Assist 4 emergency braking system – with pedestrian recognition technology – as well as Proximity Control Assist and a driver’s airbag.

The vehicles are the subject of a buyback agreement under which each unit will cover 250,000km per year. Key to the package put together by Mertrux were their guaranteed residual values at the end of the term.

This is Samworth’s first multiple-unit order for Mercedes-Benz trucks; the operator has been running a single Actros tractor for the last four years, which has clocked up one million km. The unit has now been refurbished and converted for use under a sponsorship deal with Mertrux, by the operator’s supply chain academy.

Driver training is being delivered at Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ Wentworth Park site in South Yorkshire, and at the operator’s own locations.

Mertrux has installed an imprest parts stock at Samworth’s Leicester workshop and will be providing support with any warranty or other technical issues.
