Scania boosts 13-litre engine range with 540hp version29 August 2019

Scania has expanded its range of 13-litre engines to include a 540hp (533bhp) version.

The new engine – DC13 166 – is intended for applications needing power and drivability, but where weight sensitivity or limitations such as front-axle loads hinder the use of its slightly heavier V8 engines.

The latest addition means that Scania now offers five versions of the inline six – 370, 410, 450, 500 and 540hp – with the 540 sharing most of its technology with its 500hp sibling, including a fixed geometry turbo unit with ball bearings instead of journal bearings.

The manufacturer says low internal friction, a new turbo and smart auxiliaries all contribute to the 540hp’s ability to deliver fuel savings of up to 2%.

“The improved fuel figures and the power versus weight ratio will make this engine an attractive choice for many Scania customers,” says Alexander Vlaskamp, senior VP and head of Scania Trucks.

“Developing 2,700Nm of torque at just 1,000rpm allows everything from a vehicle specified for high-speed cruising while using a low axle ratio to keep engine revs low at top speed, to excellent startability via hub reduction axles in applications such as forestry.”
