Scania unveils Streamline G and R trucks, claims 8 per cent fuel cut 21 March 2013

Scania Streamline – the Swedish manufacturer's G- and R-series long-haul trucks – launched today 21 March 2013, are being claimed to deliver fuel savings of up to 8%.

That's the figure for the trucks fitted with Scania's second-generation 450 and 490bhp Euro 6 engines, but even its Euro 3, 4 and 5 power plants will deliver up to 5%.

The new trucks, which have been re-optimised for fuel efficiency and equipped with full air deflector kits, also feature a new version of Scania's Opticruise, with a choice of performance modes.

Henrik Henriksson, executive vice president of sales and marketing, says that to maximise fuel savings, a new Economy mode has been integrated with Scania Active Prediction. And he explains that to boost uptime and reduce service hours, Scania workshops now have access to remote diagnostics.

"Scania has invested a lot of ingenuity and know-how in perfecting the truck range for Euro 6," comments Henriksson. "We note with pride that our Euro 6 engines use less fuel than their Euro 5 predecessors."

That's because Scania's second-generation 13-litre Euro 6 engines are 2—3% more economical. That's on top of the 2—3% from Scania Opticruise and Scania Active Prediction.

"In addition, we have improved the aerodynamics and reduced drag in our gearboxes," states Lars Stenqvist, Scania's senior vice president vehicle definition.

"Even though you cannot simply add the figures, we estimate that the potential saving for a European Euro 6 long-haulage customer could reach 8%."

For those interested in the detail, Scania Streamline's new air deflector kit has been designed to further improve the airflow around the front and along the sides of the G- and R-series cabs. There's also a redesigned sun visor and a new set of optional auxiliary lamps.

The most obvious modifications are the truck's smoothed cab corners, while a patented deflector lip just above the headlights apparently generates the swirl required to keep dirt and spray off the door handle.

As for that second generation Euro 6 engine range, beyond the 450 and 490bhp engines cited above, there are also SCR-only (selective catalytic reduction) 410bhp six-cylinder engines and new 520 and 580bhp Euro 6 V8s, with conventional EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) and SCR.

The latter are the only Euro 6 V8s on the market, and are based on the 16.4-litre platform, introduced with the 730bhp unit. Like Scania's inline 13-litre engines, the new V8s have torque-to-power ratios in excess of five.

These are serious load luggers: the 520bhp unit delivers 2,700Nm at 1,000-1,300 r/min, while the 580bhp unit manages an impressive 2,950Nm, from 1,000—1,350rpm, with a nice fat power curve.

By the way, there are also optional Recaro seats, LED rear lamps, new beds and a whole bunch of styling options.
