Schmitz Cargobull reefer order boosts TOM rental fleet 15 January 2014

TOM Vehicle Rental has expanded its fleet with an order for 31 Schmitz Cargobull S.KO Cool tri-axle reefer trailers, taking 27 immediately and four more in the next few weeks.

Funded through Schmitz Cargobull Finance, the reefers are the first new Schmitz Cargobull trailers that Airdrie-based TOM has purchased, and join a fleet of more than 5,000 vehicles, ranging from cars and vans to trucks and trailers.

"We are confident that the trailers will retain a strong residual value as the used market has excellent desire for trailers carrying the Schmitz Cargobull name," comments Robert Stewart, TOM's group commercial director.

The reefers are being equipped with Schmitz's ROTOS running gear and, as well as Thermo King dual-temperature refrigeration units, they have side doors and tail-lifts to maximise versatility.

With their semi-chassis design, these reefers sit 100mm lower than similar semi-trailers, while maintaining the same internal working height dimensions. This reduces the frontal area of the trailer by 2.4%, lowering aerodynamic drag force by the same amount and enabling claimed fuel savings of 1.2%.

The reefers also feature a vapour diffusion-proof body to give a permanently low unladen weight – potentially saving a further £500 per annum in fuel, according to Schmitz.

TOM expects to keep the trailers in operation for seven years.
