Scottish haulier expands fleet with new Volvo FH16 December 2013

Dumfries & Galloway-based haulier Hayton Coulthard Transport has added 25 new Volvo FH 6x2 tractor units to its 70-strong fleet, and ordered its first Euro 6 FH for delivery in January 2014.

The new trucks were all specified with the D13 460bhp engines mated to I-Shift automated gearboxes, as well as Volvo's Globetrotter cabs and, unusually, rear-lift axles.

"We've opted for the rear-lift axles as we carry out a lot of farm deliveries, where good traction and manoeuvrability are vital," states Hayton Coulthard managing director Duncan Coulthard.

He also explains that the firm has been using a third party satellite tracking system, but is now trialling Volvo's Dynafleet in six of the new trucks. Early results are good and Coulthard says: "I'm sure this system has a future in our fleet."

He also praises the Globetrotter cab, adding that several extras have been specified for drivers, including refrigerators, microwave ovens and swivelling passenger seats for added comfort when off duty.

Half of Coulthard new trucks were also fitted with PTOs (power take offs) for use with the firm's walking floor trailers. The others tractor units pull a variety of general haulage trailer types, including fridge vans, curtainsiders and platforms.

Hayton Coulthard sticks to a one-driver, one-truck policy and each of the new Volvo FHs is expected to accrue around 150,000km per year.
