SM UK opens second vehicle conversion centre07 January 2020

Vehicle engineering and safety equipment supplier SM UK is opening a £3m vehicle conversion workshop in the Midlands this month.

The facility in Tamworth is SM UK’s second conversion centre – the first opened in Leeds at the beginning of last year (see link below).

The Tamworth site will accommodate up to 24 large trucks, says the firm, and will carry out installations for the Halo cyclist detection system, vehicle CCTV, ultrasonic detection systems and van conversions.

The facility is opening with a staff of 10: SM UK says it is planning more recruitment and the launch of an apprenticeship scheme in the coming months.

Steve MacDonald (pictured), SM UK’s managing director, says: “Our northern conversion centre in Leeds has proved a huge success in the year since it launched, enabling us to collect and work on customers’ vehicles in a professional and modern environment without taking up time and space at their own premises.

“We’re opening the new Midlands centre on the same model as our Leeds workshop. Initially it will be a great resource for our many existing Midlands-based customers, including Mercedes, Volvo and DAF... and we hope to attract new clients in the region as we grow.”
