Smiths & Sons specifies Brigade safety systems fleet-wide 12 July 2016

Smiths & Sons, of Bletchington, Oxfordshire, which specialises in quarry-based haulage, is now specifying Brigade’s Backeye360, Sidescan systems and mobile digital recording safety devices for all new tippers.

Smiths transport manager Paul Needle explains that the firm had been concerned about driver information overload and was encouraged by industry acceptance of CLOCS (Construction Logistics Cyclist Safety) and FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition System).

“Smiths are very proactive when it comes to vulnerable road user safety and, having trialled various vehicle camera systems, we were the first tipper operator to fit the Backeye360 [intelligent camera monitor] system,” he recalls.

Smiths & Sons is now also fitting Brigade’s Sidescan obstacle detection kit to the entire fleet to meet FORS, CLOCS and Crossrail requirements.

Fitted along the lower nearside edge of the cab, this four-sensor system works with a Backchat speaking alarm, providing audible warnings for drivers and vulnerable road user to hazards when vehicle are turning or manoeuvring at low speed.

According to Needle, sSince fitting the systems, Smiths & Sons’ drivers have reported benefits, including reduced information overload.

“I was very impressed with Brigade’s product, the Backeye360 in particular. The drivers immediately saw the benefits of the all-round view and the system has now been made a part of our standard specification for all new vehicles.”
