South West Water taps into fuel savings with Lightfoot18 November 2014

Utilities business South West Water is installing the Lightfoot in-cab driver efficiency system in 54 Peugeot vans, after a trial earlier this year delivered fuel savings of more than 15%.

The trial was conducted 'blind' for the first four weeks, with visual and audible commands switched off, so that baseline figures could be determined.

A further eight-week live trial, with fully activated Lightfoot units, was followed by a further two-week blind trial to assess how much driver behaviour changed.

The resulting 15% fuel saving has led to the system being installed in 54 Peugeot vans (supplied by Hawkins Motor Group), which are used for leak detection, and this is likely to roll out into the rest of the 750-strong fleet.

"We've been most impressed with the results from the trial, hence our decision to install Lightfoot across our fleet of 'leak detection' vehicles for the next five years," says Mark Karkeek, South West Water's transport manager.

"From my perspective, there's little management intervention required to use Lightfoot, and feedback from our drivers is very positive," he adds.
