Spanish bus operator gives thumbs up to emissions retrofit solution 12 November 2010

Barcelona's bus and metro operator Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has revealed that it is using Eminox's retrofit SCRT technology to cut emissions on more than 360 of its buses.

The decision was prompted by the Catalan Government's air quality edict, which stipulates that all Euro 2 and 3 buses must be upgraded to a minimum of Euro 4 by 2014.

However, Josep-María Armengol, who heads up engineering at TMB, explains that the organisation wanted to take its Euro 2 and 3 vehicles beyond Euro 4, targeting Euro 5 instead.

Independent testing at homologation test centre Idiada, confirmed that the Eminox SCRT system could achieve more than that – reaching emissions equivalent to EEV (enhanced environmentally friendly vehicle), he says, with active emission controls that monitor performance.

And he adds the obvious – that by using Eminox's technology, TMB will achieve the emissions improvement at a fraction of the cost of purchasing new buses – in fact one fifteenth of the price. And the system removes more than 90% of particulate matter, hydrocarbons and CO, plus more than 70% of NOx.

Eminox's team of specialists have already fitted 120 buses with the SCRT technology on site at TMB depots. A programme is now in place to complete phase two of the upgrade project during next year.

"We are very pleased that we put our trust in Eminox and, thanks to them, we have been able to adapt to these changes in environmental legislation," comments Armengol.

"The Eminox team has demonstrated great speed and flexibility in developing their systems to fit the tight space envelopes of our low floor buses. Their skill in producing solutions without compromising on quality is highly valued at TMB," he adds.
