Sparkling debut for Volkswagen’s Tristar concept vehicle25 September 2014

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has taken the wraps off a new concept vehicle, called Tristar, which combines all the features of the current T series but, says VW, gives a view of future generations of the Transporter.

Unveiled at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show this week, in Hanover, the Tristar is a rugged pick-up with extended cab, styling bar and short wheelbase.

It also has permanent four-wheel drive with a mechanical rear axle differential lock and has 30mm extra ground clearance.

The van is powered by a 2.0 l TDI engine, offering 204bhp and 450Nm torque at 1,400 rpm, and has been equipped with a seven-speed gearbox.

Loads can be transported on two levels – the vehicle has a spacious, dust-proof and watertight drawer under the flatbed section, where a deep-tread spare tyre is also located.

Inside, there is a 20-inch tablet table and video conferencing system. Driver and passenger seats can turn and slide, converting the Tristar into a meeting place, complete with an espresso machine.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Eckhard Scholz, chairman of the board of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, said the Tristar "combines elements of yesterday and tomorrow".

And he added: "It demonstrates potential and proves it is still the benchmark."
