Technicians challenged to test their skills online 15 April 2013

With just over a month and a half before bus operators go head-to-head in this summer's IRTE Skills Challenge, technicians are being invited to step up to the plate and test their knowledge online.

The IRTE Skills Challenge brings together the best bus technicians in the UK to compete in a series of mechanical, electrical and bodywork tasks.

On behalf of organiser IRTE (Institute of Road Transport Engineers), competition host S&B Automotive Academy has now developed an online test for bus technicians – giving even more people the chance to get involved.

"The online tests are an overview of the general technology associated with the skills that a competent technician should have," comments deputy chief executive of S&B Richard Belton.

"There are separate tests for each of the disciplines – mechanical, electrical and bodywork – and they have been put together ... as an initial self-assessment for each of the prospective entrants to IRTE Skills Challenge 2013."

While practical elements of this summer's top technical competition remain secret, the online quiz is open to competitors and interested technicians everywhere.

"The online tests are a good way for operators to choose teams for the event," states Belton. "Talking to team leaders from previous years, it is one of a few tools they use to decide on their final team for the challenge."

Sponsored by Allison Transmission, BAE Systems, Bridgestone, Knorr-Bremse and Shell Lubricants, the IRTE Skills Challenge has nine awards from Halfords Trade up for grabs.

The competition itself will see teams of technicians and apprentices taking the challenge at S&B Automotive Academy from 29 to 31 May 2013. Operators already signed up include Arriva, First Group, Go-Ahead, London Borough of Redbridge, Translink and Reading Buses.
