Thomas takes Scania UK truck driver trophy25 June 2012

Shrewsbury man Gareth Thomas, 26, has taken first place at the UK final of Young European Truck Driver 2012, which was staged at the Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon, Warwickshire, last weekend (22—23 June 2012).

Thomas will now go on to compete in the European final, where he will have the chance to win a new Scania truck.

Immediately after collecting the winner's trophy, Thomas commented: "I'm overwhelmed – this was quite unexpected. I'm also elated and feel proud and privileged to have won. I'm really looking forward to participating in the final in Sweden."

The runner-up was Kevin Howard, of Royal Wootton Basset, with Jason Lambourne, of Great Finborough, Suffolk, taking third place. Their achievements saw them take home £750 and £500 respectively.

The European final will be held at Scania's headquarters in Sweden on 7—8 September 2012.
