Time for change: brake fluid checks28 January 2020

ZF Aftermarket is reminding workshops that brake fluid should be changed every year to ensure optimal performance of the braking system.

The consistency of brake fluid is vital, says ZF, and water ingress can result in loss of brake force or even brake failure, it points out.

ZF says the average water content for brake fluid is 0.05%, and this will increase year on year. When it exceeds 3%, the boiling point of the fluid drops from dry boiling point (205-260°C) to wet boiling point (140-180°C). If the water content exceeds 3.5%, the fluid must be changed urgently, says ZF, as the brake fluid could ‘boil’ when the brakes are applied.
