‘Too late’ – FTA responds to Driver CPC move on permissible ID05 September 2014

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has announced that drivers can now use their digital tachograph cards or driver qualification cards as identification when attending Driver CPC training.

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) welcomes the announcement as "a sensible move", but says it should have been introduced years ago.

For the last five years, drivers have been refused DCPC training if they did not have their licences – for example, if the DVLA was holding them for medical review.

The legislation surrounding permissible forms of ID is expected to change on 26 September 2014, 16 days after the 10 September Driver CPC deadline.

"This last-minute decision by DVSA lets its sister agency DVLA off the hook for now, as they continue to offer the industry poor service standards in conducting licence medical reviews," says James Firth, FTA's head of road freight and enforcement policy.

He adds: "DVLA chief executive officer Oliver Morley told FTA's National Road Freight Council in July this year that he accepted the Agency's service standards on medical reviews were not good enough, with some drivers waiting months to get their licence back while it is held up in government bureaucracy."
