Top bus and coach engineers rise to the Challenge19 July 2016

The results of the 2016 IRTE Skills Challenge, aimed at finding the best of the best bus technicians, have been revealed and include Go-Ahead London, which scooped the top prize for outstanding team.

Witold Wolski, Tom King and Chris Wright (pictured) scored highest in the event, which tests technicians and apprentices in a series of mechanical, electrical and bodywork tasks.

Martin Tomkins from Metroline won the Philip Margrave memorial award for outstanding achievement. Introduced last year, it is presented to the individual who most embodies the spirit of the IRTE Skills Challenge – of engineering excellence and commitment to their profession.

Tomkins’ nomination described him as “a credit to himself, the company and most of all, the industry”.

In all, 19 teams competed this year from Go-Ahead London, Go South Coast, Abellio London and Surrey, Arriva, London United Buses, First Bus, Tower Transit, Translink, Metroline, and Trentbarton.

“The IRTE Skills Challenge is a wonderful opportunity for the industry to celebrate its best and brightest stars,” says Ian Chisholm, managing director of SOE, the umbrella organisation for the IRTE.

“Each year this event continues to grow and the level of skill and professionalism increases. Well done to everyone who competed this year and I look forward to seeing even more teams in 2017.”

The awards were presented last week at the Jaguar Experience, in Birmingham.
