Tough market continues for commercial vehicles 09 August 2010

Recent sales figures show van sales registrations for July were steady, with just 0.1% growth over the rolling year, most likely due "to the budget restraint and cuts in public spending", according to Retail Motor Industry director Sue Robinson.

"Truck registrations were up marginally in July, year on year, but this is compared to very poor sales this time last year," she observes. Truck registrations over the last 12 months are still down 25.8%.

"We are still seeing continuous erosion of the truck market. Hopes are better for 2011 but it will still be a very challenging time for truck dealers," comments Robinson.

However, pointing to the coalition government's cost cutting agenda, Robinson adds: "It's understandable that business customers are hesitant about spending their cash or taking on a vehicle loan. Business customers want the confidence to see the future … before making large commitments."
