Traffic area maintenance committees call for volunteers 15 October 2015

The Western Traffic Area Maintenance Committee is urging fleet managers and engineers working for smaller transport operators to spare a few hours of their time, once every three months, to consider offering support.

Volunteer Eddie Farley explains that these committees were set up after the 1968 Transport Act to provide a forum where fleet operators and fleet engineers could meet with the traffic commissioner, police, associations and the then VOSA staff.

The objective was to air views and identify transport-related problems, both operational and engineering, around, for example operators licensing, VOSA (now DVSA), etc – with all observations kept anonymous.

To date, committees have been successful in several areas concerning transport operations, including promoting the IRTE and irtec technician licensing – helping to ensure compliance and competence for technicians.

Farley makes the point that the FTA (Freight Transport Association) and RHA (Road Haulage Association) do provide avenues for comment – but “at the expense of membership fees”.

He also notes that not every fleet operator is a member. “There are many operators with less than five vehicles who could benefit from low cost representation,” he says.

Farley explains that maintenance committees are both voluntary and free, although some may seek a small voluntary donation to cover administrative expenses.

“They are valued by traffic commissioners and your contribution would be welcomed particularly by the Western Traffic Area Maintenance Committee, which is making a call now for new members and leadership,” he says.

“If you can spare two hours every three months to contribute towards this worthwhile work then please contact: jefcare@btconnect.com.
