Traffic commissioners release annual report30 October 2019

The Office of the Traffic Commissioner has published its annual report for 2018/19, in which it highlights compliance issues it encountered during the year.

Brake test performance was a key concern, says the report, along with transport manager accountability, digital tachographs and driver management, and bridge strike incidents.

The report also sets out the forthcoming plans for the traffic commissioners and delivers statistics on work carried out.

During the year to March 2019, more than 13,000 HGV licence applications were processed, along with 1,200 bus/coach licences, and 20,000 local bus service registrations. In addition, the TCs held almost 1,600 public inquiries and 3,000 driver conduct hearings.

In the report, senior traffic commissioner Richard Turfitt says: “At a time when industry is facing considerable uncertainty, it is appropriate to stress the continuity and the consistency which traffic commissioners deliver.

“In a changing environment it is important that we are equipped to respond to new challenges: for example acknowledging changes in bus patronage, new vehicle registrations, operating costs, the ability to harness the potential of new drivers, the introduction of autonomous vehicles, more stringent emissions targets, to name but a few of the issues.”
