Transmissions power fleet efficiency – and paper shredding 24 October 2013

Canada-based Shred-Tech – which supplies mobile shredding truck, including the MDX-1 shredding trucks – says it chose fully automatic gearboxes powered by Allison Transmission, not only to boost fleet efficiency, but also to power the trucks' on-board shredding equipment.

The MDX-1, which is based on a DAF LF55 16-tonne chassis and assembled in the UK by coach and truck body builder EH Huttonm, of Melton Mowbray, can shred materials in two sizes – meaning that mobile shredding companies can now send one truck to a site, instead of two, cutting costs and raising productivity.

Shred-Tech's Joe Roberto explains: "In some cities, where congestion can turn a 20-minute drive into a two-hour journey, using one truck per job can significantly reduce fuel consumption and deliver cost-effective time savings."

Making that work is about using the dual PTO (power take off) on the Allison 3000 Series transmission to power the hydraulic pumps for the shredding units – avoiding the need for separate engines.

According to Roberto, the Allison technology enables rapid switching and simultaneous operation of both shredders at the touch of a button. In fact, the secondary high-security shredder can be engaged and powered up within four seconds.

One company reaping the benefits is PHS Datashred, which has eight MDX-1 trucks in its fleet. Each has a duty cycle of between eight and 11 hours per day, shredding up to four tonnes of documents.

"The dual shredding functionality enables us to carry out varied job specifications without requiring numerous different trucks," comments transport manager Ian Walsh.

"The MDX-1 can shred at almost double the rate of our previous models," he continues, adding that fuel consumption is down per kg of shredded material, while carbon emissions per tonne processed have dropped by 45%.

"The combination of a DAF chassis and Allison transmission results in a shredding truck that is reliable, easy-to-operate and delivers cost-effective and efficient productivity," says Walsh.

"We have been impressed with the capability of Shred-Tech's MDX-1 and will be adding five more trucks to our fleet imminently."
