Transport training provider awards top marks to Volvo FL05 February 2019

Wiltshire Transport Training & Development has taken delivery of its first Volvo truck – an FL 4x2 16-tonne rigid, with a box body by TWR Commercial Bodybuilders.

Supplied by dealer Truck and Bus Wales and West, the short wheelbase, 4,700mm chassis is powered by a Volvo D5K engine rated at 237bhp and has a six-speed I-Sync automated manual transmission.

The medium cabbed rigid also features front steel and rear air suspension, and 19.5in wheels.

For driver training purposes, the box body is loaded with five tonnes of ballasted containers.

Volvo’s manual regeneration facility was a key factor for the operator after it began to experience problems with the exhaust regeneration system of another truck.

“Our short mileage stop-start training drives, with their attendant low engine temperature conditions, were proving problematic with our other vehicle makes,” explains Nick Rees, owner of the Devizes-based training provider.

“A number of exhaust-related issues were joined by the possibility of an engine warning lamp coming on during a driving test – that’s a scenario we must avoid.

He adds: “With its manual regeneration system, the new Volvo FL eliminates that potential issue completely and a candidate who has trained all week can take their test without concern.”

The new FL is supplied with a five-year Volvo Gold R&M contract and is expected to remain in service for six years.
