Travis Perkins returns for first Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Lutons02 June 2011

Travis Perkins' plumbing, heating, kitchens and joinery divisions are taking delivery of Mercedes-Benz chassis cabs, with lightweight Luton bodies by dry freight specialist Bevan Group.

It's something of a departure for the builders' merchants group, which has previously taken Mercedes-Benz Long-bodied Sprinter 313CDI panel vans, with low-emission 129hp Euro 5 engines – 68 in 2010 and 103 this year.

"We've specified Lutons this time to reflect the different profiles of the products we have to carry," explains Travis Perkins' group transport operations manager Liam Holland. "Some, such as oil-fuelled boilers, are very heavy, and the chassis cab allows us to fit a tail-lift while still retaining a decent payload."

Holland believes the Sprinter is "a great all-round package". ?He cites its quality, reliability and longevity, as well as the vehicle's fuel economy and the three-year, unlimited mileage manufacturer's warranty.

In addition to its Sprinters, Travis Perkins bought 19 Euro 5 Fuso Canters from Intercounty Truck & Van during 2010, and has taken a further seven this year with eight more on order.

The 3.5-tonne Canter 3C13s have alloy dropside bodies and are used by the group's Keyline heavy building and construction materials division to deliver tools and equipment.

"Intercounty provides a first-class service," commentsr Holland. "Deliveries invariably take place as they should, with the vehicles arriving on time and to the correct specification."
