TRW to roll out electric park brake to light commercial vehicles09 March 2015

TRW is to introduce its electric park brake (EPB) technology to light commercial vehicles, with the first application being to a North American high-volume truck in 2017.

Extending the EPB range to light trucks and sports utility vehicles (SUVs) will bring benefits for vehicle manufacturers, says TRW, notably its weight-saving ability which can improve fuel economy and reduce carbon emissions.

Ed Carpenter, VP and general manager of TRW's braking business, adds that shifting from a mechanically-controlled to an electronically-controlled solution enables other functions that could add value for the end user.

"For example, EPB can work in conjunction with electronic stability control to allow for safer emergency stops by preventing wheel lock, or help relieve fatigue in traffic jam situations by holding the vehicle stationary when needed and allowing the vehicle to move forward when safe to proceed," Carpenter says.

Other advantages include freeing up cab space, with the EPB requiring only a button or switch and electronic wiring, instead of the traditional lever or pedal.
