Tuffnells sees tech benefits with new Sprinter19 December 2019

Parcel delivery business Tuffnells has taken delivery of the first of a 35-strong order for Mercedes-Benz Sprinters, with the operator highlighting, in particular, the new model’s technological capabilities.

The third-generation Sprinter has 4G internet connectivity, and its Mercedes PRO connect solution provides operators with a range of vehicle management service packages. These allow vehicle data to be analysed in real time – from fuel consumption to vehicle locations, trip history, maintenance status and driver behaviour.

“Mercedes PRO connect promises to be a highly effective new tool in helping us to manage the fleet efficiently and reduce our operating costs,” predicts Simon Parsons, services director at Tuffnells’ parent company Connect Group.

“Its introduction means decisions will be data driven, so based on hard, factual information relayed directly from the vehicles.”

Supplied by dealer Roanza Truck & Van, the Sprinters are all 316CDI models with extra-long L4 bodies and H2 high roofs. Bespoke, half-length bulkheads and uprated security locks are being fitted by VCL, of Stockport; RS Connect, of Birmingham, is adding cameras to all four sides of the vehicle.

Standard safety features on the latest model include the autonomous Active Brake Assist system, with pedestrian recognition technology, and Attention Assist, which detects drowsiness in drivers and encourages them to take breaks when tired.

Parsons adds: “The Sprinter’s specification, particularly in terms of safety and technology, makes it ideally suited to our operations. I’ve every confidence that these impressive new vans will allow us to continue providing our customers
