Turners cuts costs with fuel-efficient Mercedes-Benz Actros 12 December 2011

Newmarket-based Turners has taken its first deliveries of Mercedes-Benz trucks from a batch of 30 premium specification Actros 2544 MegaSpace tractor units.

Managing director Paul Day says the order resulted from a focus on cost-cutting, with the company first seeding one Actros, in 2010.

It performed so well, According to Day, that Turners returned soon after, with an order for six more, since when it has added further batches. By the end of January 2012, when the last of its new MegaSpace tractor units enters service, Turners will be operating 55 Actros vehicles.

Looking at the vehicles themselves, power comes from the 440bhp BlueTec engine throughout, and Turners says it is recording average returns of 9.6mpg.

"Today's market is brutal, compared to what we're used to," comments Day. "There's less work about, and margins are under greater pressure than ever before.

"Against such a tough economic backdrop, cost control is paramount. The Mercedes-Benz Actros is proving extremely cost-effective to operate. Its fuel returns are right up there with the very best, while it has also proved exceptionally reliable."

The trucks are being supplied, like Turners' previous Actros, by East Anglian dealer Orwell Truck & Van.
