UK hauliers halve NOx emissions in five years31 May 2019

Harmful NOx emissions from trucks have halved in the last five years, according to figures from the Department for Transport.

The statistics show a 52% fall between 2013 and 2018 as haulage firms have upgraded to cleaner Euro VI vehicles.

The Road Haulage Association predicts that NOx emissions from HGVs will have reduced by more than 80% by the end of 2025 (see link below), but it also warns that some operators face an uncertain future as local authorities continue to implement clean air zones, where non-compliant hauliers will be charged up to £100 per day.

RHA chief executive Richard Burnett says other sources, such as cars and industrial sites, should be targeted.

“The government is signing off poorly conceived measures which punish hauliers for local authority failures to keep emissions in check.

“But we’re leading the way – we’ve more than halved our NOx emissions in the last five years and this will only continue as firms upgrade their fleets.”
