Van fleet operators are paying too much for tyres, warns ATS Euromaster23 April 2014

Operators of van fleets could be paying over the odds for their tyres and reducing fleet efficiency by failing to adopt a formal tyre policy.

That's the warning from ATS Euromaster, which says light commercial vehicle tyres can no longer be considered a low-cost option, as the operational tyre costs for van fleets are now approaching those of a truck fleet.

FTA (the Freight Transport Association) recently surveyed its van members, in conjunction with Van Excellence partner ATS Euromaster, and found that a third of respondents did not have a tyre policy.

ATS says standardising on one brand can often result in a better fleet discounts. A well-managed policy, it adds, can also achieve savings in running costs, by maximising longevity, safety, performance and fuel efficiency.

"The results highlighted that there are still a significant number of van fleets missing out on potentially valuable savings to their bottom line," comments Simon Tattersall, ATS Euromaster's head of national accounts.

"A comprehensive policy, where regular inspections are carried out by experienced technicians, allows tyres to be closely monitored. This helps to guard against unexpected downtime and ensures replacements are fitted at the optimal time."

ATS will be demonstrating its van service, maintenance and repair skills on its stand at the CV Show in Birmingham, from 29 April to 1 May. Visitors to the stand can also pick up a top-tips guide to running van fleets more efficiently.
