Van operators urged to join forces to boost professionalism19 September 2014

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) is calling on all van operators to "step up to the plate" and play their part in raising standards and boosting the sector's professionalism.

The call comes on the back of the FTA's first Van Excellence Review, launched yesterday (18 September) at the Van Fleet Summit event in Telford.

The report recognises the role that van operators play and the importance of the market – the fastest growing in the automotive sector, with 3.4 million vehicles.

The Review outlines the challenges facing operators and the need for more professionalism within the van sector. The association is urging van operators not yet accredited to the Van Excellence scheme to join forces to raise standards.

"FTA Van Excellence would like to issue a challenge ... to anyone associated with the van sector," says FTA's head of vans Mark Cartwright. "Vans underpin the economic activity of the UK. In this report we have identified the many challenges which affect van operators and the various solutions which are possible."

"Van Excellence members already recognise the importance of excellence in their operations, but it is now time for all in the sector to join forces and help professionalise this growing industry," he adds.

In another announcement at yesterday's Van Fleet Summit event, FTA's Gary Whittam was awarded the inaugural Van Excellence Lifetime Contribution Award, for his work to develop standards and establish the Van Excellence code since its inception four years ago.

Prior to joining FTA in 2007, Whittam was Ford of Britain's director of commercial vehicles, responsible for the largest commercial vehicle market outside of the US.
