Van sales bounce back in May09 June 2014

Commercial vehicle registrations rose by 12.6% in May to 27,198, boosted by the van sector's return to growth after stagnating the previous month.

Figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show van demand in May bounced back with 24,283 registrations, an increase of 18.4% on the same month last year.

Truck sales, however, continued to feel the effect of Euro 6 legislation, with registration down 20%.

Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, described the return to growth in van sales as "a solid performance that was pleasing to see after a -0.6% blip in registration levels last month".

Van sales remain in line with SMMT forecasts, he adds: "It is likely that 2014 truck volumes will fall behind last year's total, while new van introductions should sustain this part of the market."
