Van volumes rocket in July, driving 25% boost to total CV registrations07 August 2014

Registrations of vans rocketed last month (July 2014), fuelling a 25% increase in total commercial vehicle registrations.

According to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), total CV registrations rose by 25.8% in July compared to the same month last year.

This was driven by strong growth in the van sector, which saw an increase of 34.5%, compared with July 2013, while truck registrations fell by just over 16% for the same period.

SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes describes the van registrations surge as "impressive", adding: "This reflects growing business confidence in the economy and the variety of highly capable and efficient vans on the market."

The continuing downward trend in truck numbers follows the influx of remaining Euro 5 orders at the end of 2013, he says.

"There is increasing positivity in the market, however, which should see registrations [of new Euro 6 commercial vehicles] return to normal levels over the coming months."

The highest performing van range for July was for those in the 2.0—2.5 tonnes group, which delivered growth of a staggering 78%.

In stark contrast, in the truck sector, two-axle artics were down 68% on the same month last year.
