Veolia chooses EEV-engine Mercedes for Camden 18 June 2010

The first Mercedes-Benz Econic refuse trucks to be factory-fitted with ultra-clean EEV (enhanced environmentally friendly vehicle) engines have now entered service in the London borough of Camden.

Recycling and waste management specialist Veolia Environmental Services, which played a key part in developing the low-entry Econic chassis, ordered the 39 vehicles, after winning a seven-year extension to its contract with Camden Council – bringing its total to nearly 500 in the UK alone..

Supplied by Warrington dealer Enza, they are all 6x2 Econic 2629LL models, with rear-steer axles and Geesink Norba compactor bodies. Power is provided by the six-cylinder 210kW (286hp) OM 906 LA engine.

These are the first units be delivered since Mercedes-Benz decided to equip its municipal chassis range with engines that meet the EEV emissions standard, which provides a voluntary interim between Euro 5 and 6 emission standards.

Veolia fleet director Rob Stubbs says: "We are keen to do everything possible to improve our emissions profile, and the clean, 'green' EEV-engined Econic is certainly going to play a significant role in helping us to achieve this goal."

He also comments on the Econic's full air suspension, which not only makes the vehicle quieter but has allowed an axle-load indicator to be integrated with the suspension airbags.

"That's a big plus," says Stubbs, "because it means we don't have to buy and retrofit a third-party product, and thus ensures the fleet is fully compliant."

Beyond that, Camden's RCVs have been equipped with SafetyStop aids by Sentinel Systems, of Cirencester, which apply the vehicle's brakes automatically if an obstacle comes within range while reversing.
